Banana chips from August Töpfer & Co.

After apples, bananas are the most popular fruit in Germany. The curved, yellow fruits originally came from India, before Arabian merchants brought them to Africa. Transporting the fruit was initially difficult. On long routes, the fruits ripened so quickly that it seemed impossible to import them to Europe in edible condition. Bananas have been in Europe since the 19th century and are now among the most economically important kinds of fruit. In Germany, around 12 to 14 kilograms of bananas are consumed per person each year.

The Arabs who exported the fruit from India gave the fruit its current name: the word “banan” means “finger” in Arabic. Besides fresh bananas, the finger-shaped fruit can also be purchased as dried or fried banana chips. The crunchy dried fruit is a tasty and healthy addition to muesli and trail mixes. At August Töpfer & Co., you can buy inexpensive banana chips or chopped banana chips from the wholesale trade for your individual needs. We supply industry, retail and international trade. Contents of banana chips

Bananas are an ideal supply of energy and they are particularly popular among athletes and active people due to their high content of carbohydrates and fructose. With essential components including potassium, magnesium, phosphorous as well as a range of vitamins, consuming bananas contributes significantly towards a healthy diet. Both fresh bananas as well as banana chips are easily digested and provide the body with prebiotics for supporting the flora of the digestive system.

Many of the healthy components of bananas are also contained in banana chips. Banana chips are bought not only for their vitamins but also their intense taste. Drying the fruit enhances the flavour, resulting in an intense taste experience when added to cereals, sweets and muesli products. Consuming banana chips improves performance and concentration and is a healthy and delicious alternative to conventional sweets.

Production of banana chips

The yellow banana – which we know and love in Europe – is only one of more than 1,000 banana varieties in different sizes, shapes and colours.
In botany, bananas are considered a type of berry fruit. The perennial plant only bears fruit once before dying.

The main regions in which bananas are cultivated are located near the equator – especially in Ecuador, Columbia, Panama and Costa Rica. We import our banana chips primarily through our contractual partners in the Philippines. The banana fruits emerge out of the flower of the banana plant over a period of three months. Due to their staggered cultivation, bananas are available throughout the entire year. Our banana chips are therefore always supplied fresh. Bananas are typically harvested when they are still green and they ripen later. To produce banana chips, unripe bananas are cut into slices after harvesting.

The bananas are then fried and dried. Using oil makes banana chips crispy. By contrast, banana chips that have only been dried and not fried have a rather leathery consistency. Sugar and honey are often added to banana chips for a more intense sweetness. After completely drying, the banana chips are carefully checked and packed.

Storage and use of banana chips

Banana chips are sweet and aromatic to taste and are a practical and healthy snack between meals. They are incredibly light, have a long shelf life and are suitable for enjoying on the go. What’s more, the banana chips from August Töpfer & Co. are an inexpensive and delicious addition to cereals, muesli products, fruit salads, yoghurt and quark, as well as snack mixes such as trail mix. In India and other parts of Asia, salty and spicy banana chips are also made from plantains, which contain more starch.

When stored properly, banana chips can be kept for several months. Like with all dried fruits, it’s important to store them in air-tight packaging in a dry environment. This prevents pests from getting to the banana chips and mould caused by moisture.
